A good update is more than entering actual dates. It is a controlled forecasting cycle that begins with field information and ends with decisions.

Set the Data Date and Status Cutoff

Everyone should understand the exact progress cutoff. Mixing status from different dates makes earned progress, manpower and schedule forecasts difficult to reconcile.

Collect Objective Field Status

Capture actual starts and finishes, remaining durations, installed quantities, blockers and realistic forecasts from the people closest to the work.

Validate Before Scheduling

Resolve impossible dates, status after the data date, unexpected open ends, out-of-sequence progress and unexplained logic changes before issuing reports.

Analyze What Changed

Trace critical and near-critical paths, compare milestones and float to the prior update, and identify whether change came from progress, logic, duration, calendars or constraints.

Issue a Complete Update Package

Provide the native file, narrative, milestone comparison, critical-path discussion, lookahead and action list required by the project.
